A hard disk drive consists of one or more rigid, metallic platters stacked on top of each other. These platters are usually made of aluminum or glass and are coated with a magnetic material. They spin at high speeds (usually 5,400 to 7,200 revolutions per minute) inside an airtight enclosure.
Positioned very close to the platters are read/write heads. These heads are responsible for reading and writing data on the surface of the spinning platters. They move rapidly to access different parts of the disk.
Data is stored on the hard disk by magnetizing tiny sections of the platter's surface. These sections represent binary data as 0s and 1s, with the orientation of the magnetic field determining the data.
